HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It produces files about 50% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, but many Windows apps and websites can't open them.

Will I lose quality when converting?

Converting to JPG involves lossy compression, but at the default quality (92%) the difference is invisible to the human eye. Converting to PNG is lossless — zero quality loss.

Why is the first file slow?

The HEIC decoder (libheif WebAssembly) needs to be downloaded and initialized on first use. This takes a few seconds. Subsequent files convert almost instantly.
